Webcam Test: Check Your Camera Online

Test your webcam online with a live preview, real resolution and measured FPS, a check of supported resolutions, test clips and PNG snapshots.

Press Start and allow camera access when your browser asks. Camera names appear after that.

Press Start to see your camera preview.

Record a test clip

Start the camera to record a short clip. Clips are not mirrored: they show what other people see.

Resolution check

Asks the camera for each common resolution in turn and reports which ones it really supports. The preview flickers while it runs.

How to test your webcam

  1. Pick a camera and, if you like, a resolution and frame rate, then press Start. Allow camera access when the browser asks.
  2. The preview appears with the delivered resolution and frame rate in the corner. The figures below it update every half second.
  3. Take snapshot saves a full-resolution PNG. Record clip captures 5, 10 or 30 seconds, with sound if you tick Include microphone, to play back and download (WebM, or MP4 where the browser cannot record WebM).
  4. Press Stop to release the camera. The webcam light should go out a moment later; if it stays on, another app or tab is still using it.

Camera names only appear once you have granted access, because browsers hide device labels from pages without permission.

What the numbers mean

Resolution, Frame rate and Aspect ratio come from MediaStreamTrack.getSettings(), which reports the mode the camera is actually running in, not the maximum printed on the box. Measured FPS counts the frames the page really displays. If it is well below the reported rate, the camera is dropping frames, usually because of low light: auto-exposure lengthens each exposure, and a 1/15 s exposure cannot deliver more than 15 frames per second. Brightness is the average luma of the picture from 0 to 100%; near zero usually means a closed privacy shutter or a covered lens.

Resolution Common name Aspect MP
640 × 480 VGA 4:3 0.31
1280 × 720 HD, 720p 16:9 0.92
1920 × 1080 Full HD, 1080p 16:9 2.07
2560 × 1440 QHD, 1440p 16:9 3.69
3840 × 2160 4K UHD 16:9 8.29

Which resolutions your camera supports

The resolution and frame rate menus send ideal constraints, as defined in the W3C Media Capture and Streams specification, so the browser picks the closest mode the camera offers instead of failing. Test resolutions is stricter: it asks for each size in the table exactly. A size the camera delivers itself counts as supported; one that Chrome can only reach by cropping and scaling a larger mode is reported as scaled, because it holds no more detail than that larger picture shrunk. Lower results than you expect usually mean the camera tops out lower, a USB 2.0 link lacks the bandwidth for high resolutions at high frame rates, or another app has the camera open in a different mode. Camera capabilities lists what the browser says the camera can adjust, such as focus or exposure ranges; many webcams report only size and frame rate.

Mirroring, snapshots and clips

The preview is mirrored by default, like a bathroom mirror. Most call apps mirror only your self-view and send the unmirrored picture to others. Snapshots follow the Mirror setting; recorded clips are never mirrored, so they show what other people see.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The camera feed goes straight from your device to the video element on this page. Test clips and snapshots are made in your browser and stay in the page’s memory until you download them or close the tab. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Why is my webcam picture mirrored?

The preview is flipped horizontally so it behaves like a mirror, which feels natural when you look at yourself. Untick Mirror to see the picture the way other people see it in a call.

Why is the measured frame rate lower than my camera's rating?

Webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to get a brighter exposure. Add light in front of you, close other apps using the camera, and connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub.

It says my camera is in use. What do I do?

Another program has the camera open. Quit video call apps, streaming software and other browser tabs that use the camera, then press Start again. If nothing else seems to be using it, restarting the browser or unplugging and reconnecting the camera can release it.

How do I test the back camera on my phone?

After you allow access, open the Camera list and choose the rear camera; phones usually list it as back or environment facing. Press Start again if it does not switch automatically.
