Three ways to make your signature

Choose black or blue ink or any colour for all three, then download a PNG with a transparent background or an SVG vector file. Both are trimmed to the ink with a little padding, so they drop neatly onto a signature line.

Tips for each method

How the photo cleanup works

Phone photos of paper are never evenly white: one corner is in shadow, the other catches the light. So the tool first estimates the paper’s brightness around every point, from the brightest pixels in small blocks, smoothed across the page. Each pixel is then compared with its own local paper, which removes shadows that a single threshold would turn into ink. Paper cut-off sets how dark a pixel must be, relative to the paper, to count as ink. The automatic value starts from Otsu’s method, which splits the brightness histogram into its two most distinct groups, and leans a little towards the paper so light strokes survive. Lower it if paper texture shows, raise it if thin strokes break up. Tiny isolated specks (dust, grain, JPEG noise) are removed, and the result is cropped to the ink. The ink can be recoloured or keep its own colour.

PNG or SVG?

Feature PNG SVG
What it stores Pixels, transparent background Vector curves
Enlarging Blurs beyond its pixel size Sharp at any size
Good for Word, Google Docs, PDF editors, email Design tools, websites

The PNG of a drawn or typed signature is drawn at twice its on-screen size by default; choose 3× or 4× for large prints. Turn on White background if an app shows transparent areas as black. A typed signature’s SVG holds the letters as outlines, so it needs no font installed. Photos have no SVG, because they are pixels.

Can I use it to sign documents?

Many legal systems accept electronic signatures for everyday agreements: the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS Regulation both say a signature cannot be denied legal effect just because it is electronic. Some documents, such as wills or notarised deeds, still need ink or a certified digital signature, so check what the recipient accepts. This is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is my signature uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. Drawn strokes, typed names and photos stay in this page’s memory while it is open. The fonts and the photo cleanup run on your device, nothing is sent to a server or written to storage, and closing or reloading the tab erases everything.

How do I add the signature to a Word document or PDF?

In Word or Google Docs, insert the PNG as a picture, then in Word set its text wrapping to In Front of Text so you can place it on the signature line. Most PDF editors, including the Fill & Sign tool in Adobe Acrobat Reader, can add an image as your signature.

Can I use the typed script fonts in my documents?

Yes. All five fonts are published under the SIL Open Font License, which allows free use, including commercial use, of the images and files you make with them.

Why does my photo still show grey patches or lose thin strokes?

Move the Paper cut-off slider. Lower values remove more of the paper, including shadows and texture; higher values keep fainter ink. If the edge of the paper or the table is in the picture, crop the photo closer to the signature and open it again.

Why does my signature appear on a black background?

The PNG background is transparent, and a few apps and image viewers display transparency as black. Turn on White background before downloading, or use the SVG file.
